Add these activities to your Jamaica itinerary

Jamaica is famous the world over for many things. But many tourists limit their Jamaican vacation to the distance from their hotel room to the beach, leaving the island without knowing the culture and history Bob Marley sang about. If you truly want to experience the real Jamaica, here are a few activities you simply must do during your visit.

Eat Jamaican food

There’s no better way to experience a new culture than to get a taste of the food. Jamaican food has a wide variety of exotic flavours that will send your taste buds into overdrive. From spicy jerk and a delicious spin on patties, to the national dish of ackee and saltfish you’re sure to find something to please the palate. Plus, the tropical climate means an abundance of exotic fruits are available throughout the year. Jamaicans love food and almost every month there’s a food celebration somewhere, whether its jerk, seafood or a cultural mix of dishes. A good time to explore authentic Jamaican food is during Independence celebrations in August.

Attend a music festival

What better way to experience reggae music than in the land it was created? A music festival is a great way to mingle with Jamaicans from all walks of life and soak in authentic reggae music for a fraction of what it costs elsewhere. Among the most popular events held annually are Rebel Salute in January, Reggae Sumfest in July, and Sting in December.

Take the Appleton Rum tour

One of the most authentic Jamaican experiences is a trip to the rum distillery for the Appleton Rum Tour (and tasting). This scenic tour will give insight into the history and production of the prominent Appleton Estate Rum, all whilst appealing to your taste buds as you are introduced to the varying flavours of 10 different types of rum.

Climb the Blue Mountains

A true nature lover’s heart would undoubtedly erupt with excitement along the journey to the peak of the highest point in Jamaica. Home of the world famous name-sake Blue Mountain Coffee, the trip to the summit is definitely not for the faint hearted. But to the true adventurer this 4 hour-hike up the Blue Mountains is an unforgettable experience for this island vacation.

Tour the Bob Marley museum

For those who share keen interest in music and reggae especially, the Bob Marley museum is definitely worth a visit. The tour explores the realms of Marley’s former home which still houses remnants of his prized possessions, as well as a hologram of the late singer. Visitors get an in-depth look into the life of the musical legend and purchase CDs and memorabilia.

Talk to an actual Jamaican

And not just your hotel waiter. The goal is to find out something about Jamaica you didn’t know before, like what exactly is ‘jerk’ cooking or how did Rastafarianism come about. Use the conversation to expand on the information from the hotel brochures. Your new-found knowledge will add to the discussion when showing off your vacay pics to family and friends.
