5 New Year Resolutions Jamaicans Quickly Abandon

By Joshcia Lawrence

It’s a new year and resolutions are a dime a dozen. But statistically, most people have either abandoned the earnest promises by now or have lost the zeal to follow through. Here are 5 resolutions that Jamaicans normally make and will likely break before February.

1. I will go to the gym
This has got to be the #1 resolution Jamaicans make! Of course we take pride in looking good but committing to a routine of exercises might be asking too much. Add to that, gyms in Jamaica are not very affordable to support a regular habit. Hence, only the faithful few will be able to stick this one out, or at least get in a few minutes of exercise at home.

2. I will never drink so much again
This was probably uttered when you woke up with a nasty hangover on New
Year’s Day. For heavy drinkers, this is also a time where they may decide that they want to ease up on the habit or at least limit drinking to fewer occasions for the year. However, unless you decide to ditch those drinking buddies, and pass up on happy hours and 2-4-1 Fridays, this resolution will be a hard one to keep.

 3. I am going to save more
This revelation usually comes on the heels of excessive spending during Christmas and just before the onslaught of January’s bills start rolling in. As if to compensate for the old, the New Year brings a spirit that has Jamaicans thinking, “Every mickle mek a muckle”. Directly translated to this context, this means that even a small amount will eventually add up to significant savings. However, not many will deprive themselves of the luxuries that would result in putting some ‘mickle’ away. And little will change if your spending habits remain the same.
 4. I am going to cut them off! (family, fake friends)
You’ve seen the posts on social media, “As this year ends, I will be leaving behind all those fake friends and no good family”. That sounds like the common resolve of those fed up with sub-standard relationships. But, with a few laughs and small family gatherings, many forget to ‘fence out’ the “hypocrites” or perhaps decide that a fake friend is better than none at all.
 5. I will start going to church
Many Jamaicans believe that on the first service of the New Year, they must be in church, and some will even continue with weekly visits. Until the end of January that is. Truth is, church attendance has more to do with personal conviction than keeping up appearances. Like everything else, in the absence of a deeper conviction as to why you are doing it then sooner or later, this promise too will be forgotten. What New Year resolutions did you make? 1. Yes they are. So if you made any of those resolutions, try tweaking the conditions or your resolves a bit.
