So you’re eating ice cubes and blasting the jumbo fan but nothing seems to work. It’s official. The place is really, REALLY HOT! Meanwhile, your workplace is forcing you to wear a stuffy jacket and sweat glands are working overtime. But the summer is just getting started, so here are a few tips to help you battle the summer heat.
Camp Out by the Riverside
There’s a river somewhere, no matter where in Jamaica you are. After all, we’re the land of wood and nuff nuff WATER! Find the nearest river, grab some friends, and chuck off! Rivers are likely to be surrounded by trees (think shade and breeze) which means they are much more refreshing than going to the beach. Plus rivers are much more accessible, and therefore ideal for a spontaneous trip. A river cookout is also possible at some locations (check beforehand) or bring a picnic basket.
Beach Day Everyday
A heat wave is a not so gentle reminder that it’s a blessing to live on an island surrounded by breathtaking beaches. Grab your swimsuit and head to the shores to be caressed by the cool waves of the Caribbean Sea. Be sure to bring lots of sunscreen to protect your skin from damaging ultraviolet rays. Yes, black people can get sunburnt! With these temperatures, it’s best to go to the beach in the early morning or late afternoon to avoid the searing midday sun.
Hydrate! Hydrate! Hydrate!
As in – drink lots of water. Support the coconut jelly vendor, bring bottled water, buy a suck-suck (frozen bag juice) if you have to. Don’t underestimate these temperatures which can quickly cause people to get dehydrated and vulnerable to heatstroke. Protect yourself by wearing loose clothing and staying hydrated to keep your internal temperature from overheating.
Lastly, don’t allow the high temperatures to ruin your summer. Scientists say higher temperatures could become the new normal, so make adjustments where you can and enjoy the summer safely.
