Riding on the global appeal of reggae music, Grammy-nominated reggae star Chronixx has been topping Billboard and various reggae charts and churning out conscious reggae lyrics to sold-out shows on nearly every continent. Take a look at the rise of the phenomenal artiste some are calling the modern day Bob Marley.
Little Chronicle
Jamar McNaughton (born 10 October 1992), popularly known as Chronixx, is arguably a notable and recognizable figure in the new wave of Jamaican reggae artistes. But before all of that, he was nicknamed “Little Chronicle” after his father, the dancehall singer “Chronicle”.
Heir to Musical Brilliance
As the son of Chronicle, Chronixx grew up surrounded by many musicians, including the likes of Burro Banton and Gregory Isaacs. Unsurprisingly, the talent was passed down and he wrote his first song, Rice Grain, at the age of five. From there, his interest in music grew and he started producing music around age 15 during his high school days. Chronixx, coached by Danny Browne, also used to be a choir director and worship leader and his first recorded song, a gospel number, was never released.
A Talent Ahead Of His Time
Chronixx’s ascension in the music industry began humbly in the background. It all started from harmonizing for artists such as Lutan Fyah and providing production assistance for tracks sung by Popcaan, Konshens and others, before he blossomed into the musical phenomenon we know today.
Achievements in abundance
He’s not doing it for the likes as his popular song suggests but Chronixx has racked up a plethora of accomplishments throughout his career. These include but most certainly aren’t limited to:
- The Dread & Terrible Project immediately topping the Billboard (US) and iTunes reggae charts in both the UK and Japan.
- His hit single ‘Here Comes Trouble’ captured the attention of American TV late-night host, Jimmy Fallon who was vacationing in Jamaica. This led to a personal request for the young musician to perform live on Fallon’s TV show more than once.
- Chronixx toured for the first time in 2013 in Europe, with his band Zinc Fence Redemption. He has since embarked on solo tours and experienced sold-out shows in New York, London, Trinidad & Tobago, Australia, Canada, and became the first band to do a 2-part tour of Jamaica (Capture Land Tour).
- Chronixx’s long-awaited debut album, Chronology, released in 2017, received a Grammy nomination for its superb catalog of songs with socially conscious lyrics that has become the hallmark of his style of contemporary reggae.
