Rolling blue-green mountains, exotic rainforests, and countless water bodies come together to paint Jamaica’s breath-taking topography. So it’s little wonder that the island’s natural features have become popular tourist attractions for the most unforgettable outdoor experiences. Here are five of the best outdoor experiences in Jamaica.
Zip lining and bobsledding at Mystic Mountain
Recommended for adventurers, a day of zip lining and bobsledding at the Rainforest Adventures Mystic Mountain will be etched in memory for years to come. Found just outside Ocho Rios, the Mystic Mountain experience begins with a Sky Lift ride that elevates you 700 feet above the rainforest canopy. The scenery below is a stunning aerial view of the natural forest, the bay of Ocho Rios, as well as of Dunn’s River Falls next door. Adding more thrill to the tour is the Canopy zipline, where one can soar from one platform to the next on an exhilarating ride through the lush rainforest. Buckle in for a heart-stopping bobsled ride with a terrifying drop mid-way that’s sure to get the adrenaline pumping.
Blue Mountain Hiking
The crack of dawn is usually the best time to start the trek up to the Blue Mountains – the birthplace of the world-famous Blue Mountain Coffee. At an impressive 2,256 metres, it’s the highest point on the island. On this frigid seven-mile journey, you’ll encounter steep intervals blanketed by lingering fog and the crisp forest air. Persevering to the top rewards you with spectacular views, especially on a clear day when the city of Kingston, Buff Bay, Portmore, St. Thomas and even as far as Cuba to the north can be seen.
Cruising the Black River Safari
An hour and a half seem entirely too short for a tour through the enthralling Black River Safari in St. Elizabeth. Famed for its population of American crocodiles, this tranquil tour on Jamaica’s largest navigable river offers the chance to see and learn the history of the natural habitats on the way. In addition to seeing one of nature’s most remarkable reptiles up close, the Black River tour careens through a network of giant Red Mangrove trees where over 100 species of birds live.
Exploring caves
About 40 minutes from Ocho Rios lies the Green Grotto Caves, a labyrinth of underground limestone caves near its border with Trelawny. Besides exploring the caves’ lake and the ancient stalagmite inside, visitors may also encounter bats calmly hanging from the ceiling. During the tour, visitors gain insight on the history of the caves, which once served as an escape route during the British invasion in the 1600s. It many tunnels were also used as a hiding place by runaway slaves.
Chasing waterfalls
Dunn’s River Falls is perhaps the most famous but it’s only one of several spectacular waterfalls spread out throughout the island. One of the most scenic natural attractions is the YS Falls on the South Coast in St. Elizabeth. Surrounded by luscious gardens and trees, the YS Falls boasts seven waterfalls which all flow into naturally forming pools. You can dive into the refreshing falls by jumping in headfirst or channel your inner dare-devil by swinging in via rope. As an added bonus, you can also experience the Canopy Zip Line escapade as well as river tubing here.
