Of the four seasons, summer is probably by far the most anticipated and loved. Here are five summer activities that you can enjoy in Jamaica to create your own memorable summer experience.
As one of the most beautiful places on earth, Jamaica has its white sandy beaches to thank for such a coveted title. Almost every inch of the island’s coastline is home to a breathtaking beach waiting to quench the summer heat. Many beaches charge entrance fee for access to changing rooms, restrooms and other facilities. But it’s a small price to pay for the opportunity to escape the unbearable heat and cool down in the Caribbean Sea.
Fill your belly with summer fruits
‘Mi nuh drink coffee tea mango time’- this popular folk song, “Mango Time” speaks volumes of how delicious Jamaican mangoes are. The season starts as early as May and by summer it seems like ‘mango heaven’. Almost at every stall or in every yard, you will find mangoes and a whole range of tropical fruits each with its own uniquely delicious flavour. Get creative in the kitchen with family members and friends – from baking, to making sauces, and the usual drink making.
River cookout with friends
Day tripping to the river has been gaining popularity in recent times, especially in rural areas. When the temperature reaches its peak in July-August, it’s time to pack up with family and friends to a nearby river, build a fire on the river bank and start cooking. It’s the perfect chance to enjoy the great outdoors, in between refreshing dips in the cool river water.
Reggae Sumfest
Attend ‘The Greatest Reggae Show on Earth’ and enjoy live performances from some of the best international and local artistes. The festival is an eclectic fusion of Reggae, Hip-Hop, RnB and Pop and is well supported by people from all over the world. Past performers include Nicki Minaj, Drake, and Jamaican artistes and Grammy winners Shabba Ranks and Damian Marley. The event is held annually at the Catherine Hall Entertainment Complex in Montego Bay.
Jamaica Independence Celebrations
Join in the celebrations of Jamaica’s freedom from slavery and later independence from British rule. Immerse yourself in authentic Jamaican culture and attend one of many activities being staged around the island from music shows, dance and ‘dress-up’ parades to the all night emancipation party at the Seville Great House in St. Ann and Mello-Go-Round held annually on August 1st, Emancipation Day. The celebrations culminate in a Grand Gala Parade and Concert at the National Stadium in Kingston on Independence Day, August 6th.
